Do the Wrong Thing
Do the Wrong Thing traces the life of an immigrant farm girl who loves learning more than anything else. It’s the quintessential “English teacher tells me I should write” story with the “disturbed parent trying to stop it because there are more practical ways to make a living.” Only, in Ava’s case, the practical way is marriage, childcare and housework, like her mom who is always threatening suicide. Do the Wrong Thing is about art, story, faith and choosing one’s own adventure when the one given one doesn’t fit. More >
The Low Self-Esteem Reading Room
The Low Self-Esteem Reading Room is literary fiction, so like Truffaut’s Day for Night it shows the scaffolding behind the story. It’s science fiction, but more like Lars von Trier’s Melancholia: there are sci-fi elements, but the basis is an exploration of psychology. LoSERR portrays a gatherer, as opposed to hunter, way of life. It uses a jaggy, non-linear storyline and a variety of forms from short story to film script to poem. It’s Northern Gothic: replace the heat with cold and it’s a Tennessee William’s play with characters experiencing extremes of emotion in response to trying life circumstances. More >
